The
"Landesbibliothek
Coburg"
currently owns about 400.000 volumes of modern scientific and historical
collections. The wide range of these stocks
includes documents from the early years of book printing to contemporary CD-ROM
databases. A great number of special collections amount to a remarkable
complement: Manuscripts (Codices), autographs, incunabulum (15th century
prints), prints of the time of Martin Luther, historical music prints and maps,
almanachs and paperbacks (1750 - 1850), exlibris, book covers (15th to 20th
century, including an important collection of historical book covers of the 19th
century) and modern bibliophily. Moreover we have subscribed to about 800
magazines, yearbooks etc. and about 30 newspapers. Apart from that the archives
of the International Draeseke Society and the German Johann-Strauss-Society are
stored in the depots of the "Landesbibliothek
Coburg".
The
regional state libraries of Bavaria, such as the "Landesbibliothek
Coburg",
are positioned between the university libraries and the public libraries. They
serve scientific purposes, including extra-academic research, professional work
as well as general further education. They are a component of the de-centralised
user-oriented supply of literature.
Moreover,
one of their most important tasks is to safeguard as well as to grant access to
the extensive archives and donated collections of important personalities of
regional history. Most significantly, the archives of the "Landesbibliothek
Coburg"
comprise of the early Court and State Library of the former duchy Saxony-Coburg
and Gotha, the Scheres-Library, the library of the Casimirianum Grammar School,
the ducal private library, the Martin-Luther-Library, the library of St. Moritz
Church, the library of the former court theatre and others. The focus of the
archives is on Reformation, Humanism, baroque literature, Enlightenment,
Positivism and 19th century theatre.
Of
equally significant importance for the work of the regional libraries is to
collect (as complete as possible), to put in storage, to register and to make
accessible publications about the region in question. For this reason the "Landesbibliothek
Coburg"
co-operates in the Bavarian Bibliography project and compiles the "Coburg
Bibliography" in this context, which is the regional bibliography of Coburg
county.
The
"Landesbibliothek
Coburg"
is connected to the international borrowing network.
